Machu Picchu, Peru and Bolivia Travel Itinerary

Here is the complete itinerary of our trip to Peru and Bolivia, which included Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and La Paz.

May 14, 2009 (LA)

May 15, 2009 (Lima, Cusco, Ollant & Aguas Calientes)

  • Arrived at airport for Cusco departure at 5.30am. Flight was delayed until 9:15 due to fog.
  • Departed for Cusco around 9:30am; Arrived at 10.30am (LAN)
  • Things to do in Cusco:
    1. Took bags to Hostal Amaru and dropped them off
    2. Bought tickets for Machu Picchu at the Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INC) (office at Calle San Bernado a few blocks from the main Plaza de Armas). Asked about special permission to enter MP before 6am to watch sunrise.
    3. Paid for Hostal Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes at GARCILASO STREET 210 CASA DEL ABUELO OFFICE 109 SIERRA ANDINA COMPANY (9am-1pm; 4pm-7pm).
    4. Went to Wanchaq Train Station and picked up Peru Rail tickets for all the trip in our itinerary. Cusco Office, Av. Pachacutec - Wanchaq Train Station Tel: +51 84 581414
    5. Had intended to buy bus tickets to Ollantaytambo (Buses depart from the main bus station known as the 'Terminal Terreste' which is a 10 minute taxi ride from the main plaza. Don’t walk!), but were late. Ended up taking taxi that we found at the train station. We paid $20 USD for a clean car buy ourselves all the way to Ollantaytambo.
    6. Spent a few hours in Ollantaytambo, visited weaving center, took photos, had dinner.
    7. Took the backpacker’s train at 8.30pm to Aguas Calientes
  • Arrived in Aguas Calientes around 11:30, checked in at Hostal Machu Picchu and went to sleep.

May 16, 2009 (Aguas Calientes, Poroy & Cusco)

  • Got up at 4 am to have breakfast, headed straight for bus stop for Machu Picchu. It was raining, waited in line for 30 minutes to buy bus ticket. (they accept USD or Soles)
  • Entered MP, went straight to gate to hike Hyuana Picchu. Returned from HP hike around 12.
  • Spent another hour seeing the rest of MP and then took the bus back to Aguas Caliantes to catch train at 3pm
  • Had lunch in Aguas Calientes at a truly horrible restaurant
  • Boarded the Vistadome (aka "G-Train") train to Poroy, then caught a bus to Cusco (there are plenty of busses at the stop)
  • Spent first night in Cusco at Hostal Amaru - $40 (Cuesta de San Blas 541, Cusco Perú – deposit paid $30)

May 17, 2009 (Cusco, Pisac & Sacred Valley)

  • Got up early next morning to head to Pisac (Pisaq) market by shared taxi.
  • Spent most of day in Pisac, bought a lot of stuff, took public bus back to Cusco.
  • Spent the rest of the day/evening in Cusco

May 18, 2009 (Puno)

  • Departed Cusco for Puno on the Andean Explorer
  • Took taxi to Hotel Intiqa – ($115) DIRECCIÓN: Jr. Tarapacá # 272 Puno Perú

May 19th, 2009

  • Tour van picked us up at hotel for tour of Lake Titicaca
  • Tour of Lake Titicaca areas by boat – Uros, Taquille and Silustani (Edgar Tours)
  • Had dinner, walked around Puno and bought ticket to La Paz from travel agency

May 20 – 23, 2009

May 21 – 22, 2009

  • Walking tour of La Paz, found many great products at fair trade shop
  • Took really touristy yet fascinating bus tour around city.

May 23, 2009

  • Took taxi to airport at 5am to catch flight back to Lima
  • Took taxi from Lima Airport to Hostal El Patio in Miraflores
  • Spent day and evening enjoying Miraflores, the sea and the night markets.

May 24, 2009

  • Took taxi to Airport for flight back to Los Angeles (TACA)
  • Layover in El Salvador
  • Arrived in Los Angeles, took taxi home.

Great itinerary. It would be great to travel to those wonderful places. Machu Picchu would indeed be a grand experience.

I've traveled to Peru before to experience Machu Picchu and my time there is remembered very fondly. I think that Cusco was such a nice town, I remember feeling that I might be able to stay there forever and be quite happy. Cold and bright were my recollections.
