Over the years we have visited Yosemite, driven through the Rocky Mountains, been up and down the West Coast, enjoyed many days in my hometown of Portland, and of course seen all sorts of exciting things here in Los Angeles. So far my writing in this blog has focused primarily on big international excursions, and I suppose I have taken these intra-US trips for granted, forgetting that our readers outside this region may find some benefit to them as well. I plan to put an end to this international bias.
Starting this coming Friday, we will begin a cross country trip originating in Los Angeles and taking us all the way across the United States to Syracuse, New York. During the trip, I will be writing and sharing photos via my iPhone (there is no Internet on the train). You can follow my progress here on the blog. You will also be able to track where we are on the Look For America Flickr Map.
The bulk of our trip will be aboard one of the country's most historic and beautiful train rides. We will travel from San Francisco to Chicago on Amtrak's California Zephyr, a 52 hour train trip that will take us through the Sierra's, the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains of the U.S. Once in Chicago we will transfer to the Lakeshore Limited, a line that runs up the shore of lake Michigan, through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York to Syracuse.
The complete itinerary is as follows:
- Drive rental car from Los Angeles to Emeryville, CA
- Board California Zephyr for 52 hour journey to Chicago
- Transfer to Lakeshore Limited for 13 hour journey to Syracuse
- Fly from Syracuse back to Los Angeles
We are so excited about this journey and the chance to see parts of the U.S. we have never seen before. We are even more excited that we get to do it during the winter so we can enjoy the Sierra's and Rocky's fully covered in snow from our warm Superliner Roommette.
Choo choo choo and please check back as the journey continues.
