In the video below you can get some idea of what the storms were like. Aside from the sound of the thunder and drone of the drops hitting the ground, what I most liked about these storms is that they cooled the air and allowed a nice breeze to blow through our flat.
Back in March 2007 when we were living in Kuala Lumpur I spent a lot of time in our flat reading and otherwise enjoying my free time. While I was there I noticed a very consistent pattern in the weather. Every day around 2pm it would rain. You would see the dark clouds coming over the horizon until suddenly the sky would open up. The storms would usually last about 1-2 ours then disappear and give way to blue sky. The phenomenon was really amazing to me, not only because it happened so consistently, but because the quantity of rain was just so intense. Within minutes the streets were covered in water and often times cars on the highway would simply pull over and stop, or slow to a crawl because visibility was so bad and the sheer depth of water on the road was too much to drive through. Considering how much drainage the roads in Malaysia have, the fact that water can actually get over an inch deep in a storm is fairly significant. It simply can't flow faster than it comes down.

I recall those storms whilst visiting Thailand and Malaysia during rainy season. In my opinion the best time to go. Love those afternoon monsoon rains and then the sun breaking through afterwards and then watching the rain evaporate from the blacktop, etc. We used to have similar rains in Korea, where I lived and worked for a couple of years. Oh, how I miss living and travelling in Asia!
